Carry a flag to celebrate Commonwealth Day

On Monday 10 March, Portsmouth will be raising the Commonwealth Flag in Guildhall Square as part of 'Fly a Flag for Commonwealth' - a nationwide initiative to celebrate Commonwealth Day.

The event will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, representatives from High Commissions of some of the Commonwealth countries, councillors and other guests. A military parade will march into the Guildhall Square, which will then be followed by the reading of the Commonwealth Affirmation and then raising of the Commonwealth Flag at 10am.

In addition to this, the event will launch the 'Portsmouth 2014 Commemorations Programme marking the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War'. To recognise the commitment of the Armed Forces from the Commonwealth, the flags of the Commonwealth nations which played a role in the D-Day landings and the First World War will be raised on the flag poles in Guildhall Square.

How you can become involved

As part of the event, the flags representing each of the 53 Commonwealth Nations will be carried into the Guildhall Square.

For this  the council are looking for local residents, schools and community groups to volunteer by coming forward to carry a flag of one of the 53 Commonwealth nations.

They anticipate that each flag will require 4 people to carry it. The flags will be provided on the day and you should arrive by 9.30am to receive the flag and be briefed. The event starts at 10am prompt and should be finished by 11.30pm at the very latest.

If you are interested in taking part and carrying a flag, then please contact, by 3 March: Portsmouth2014@portsmouthcc.gov.uk or call the office on 9283 4109 to register your details with. You can volunteer as an individual or as a group(s).

Alternatively, you are more than welcome to attend the event without carrying a flag.
