Portsmouth History Fair July 12th 2014

Come and discover the past at this year's Portsmouth History Fair. You can meet local groups for information and advice, listen to a range of fascinating talks covering subjects such as Portsmouth's involvement in D-Day or the Theatre Royal's hidden past, buy books on local history, see displays on Jonas Hanway, Arthur Conan Doyle and Spirit Photography, and view archive film from the Wessex Film and Sound Archive.
The fair will be at Portsmouth Central Library, Guildhall Square, PO1 2DX, from 10am-3pm on Saturday 12 July.

The talks (no need to book, just turn up) will be held on the third floor, Central Library, Guildhall Square, as follows:
10.30am Women Dockyard workers in World War 1 A talk by Dr Celia Clark 

10.30am Percy F. Westerman - a lifetime of writing adventures A talk by Nigel Gossop
A biographical look at the life of this Portsmouth born author of ripping yarns adventures

12 noon Portsmouth and D-Day A talk by Andrew Whitmarsh, D-Day Museum Development Officer
Portsmouth and the surrounding area were at the heart of the preparations for the Allied landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944: D-Day. The Allied commanders met at Southwick House, ships and landing craft massed in the Solent and local harbours, and troops gathered along roadsides and in camps before embarking for France.

12 noon Dockyard days out and excursions c.1880 - 1914 A talk by Dr Melanie Bassett
The talk will focus of the development of increased leisure time for the working classes and the burgeoning leisure activity of the railway excursion. Using the example of workers from Portsmouth Royal Dockyard in the late-Victorian and Edwardian period the talk will explore the leisure patterns and interests of the Portsmouth Dockyard Matey and highlight the entrepreneurialism of the men who organised the trips.

1.30pm The Theatre Royal's hidden past: Stories of secrets, lies and betrayal A talk by Donna Bish 

1.30pm All You Need is Love? Creating and maintaining historical archives A talk by Dr Dave Allen
Dr Dave Allen runs two local history projects. Pompey Pop began as a project about popular music in Portsmouth in the 1960s and is also the Hon. Archivist for Hampshire Cricket at the Ageas Bowl. Dave will draw upon specific examples from the two projects to contrast them and consider appropriate procedures for setting up and running local history archives.
