It
has been found that people with learning disabilities are often faced with
challenges when shopping.
At the Portsmouth City Council trading standards service
we believe consumer rights should be rights for everyone to enjoy and with this
in mind we are launching a Safe Shopping Area in the City Centre in October of
this year.
A drop-in session at
Commercial Road will take place on the 27th September between 10.30am and 2pm. This
will be in partnership with the Hampshire Fire Service’s Community Contact
Point.
Those
with learning disabilities can get a free Polite Request Card from Portsmouth
City Council trading standards service and are encouraged to show this to sales
persons/assistants. The aim is to help the sales person/assistant when dealing
with an individual with learning disabilities and in turn gives further
confidence to the holder by reminding them of their rights as consumers.
The
purpose of this is not to penalise traders but to let those with learning
disabilities know that they will be treated fairly and they can be confident
when visiting stores in the area. This is something that eventually we would
like to see throughout all of the main shopping areas of the City.
From now until October the trading standards service are happy to consult with stores on any
concerns, questions or suggestions they might have regarding the Safe Shopping
Area. Please do not hesitate to contact Holly
Shelbourne with any questions you might have
about this.
