Democracy Street – Fratton pilot for national digital art project

Fratton-based artist Jon Adams will be working with local residents to create a new and unique digital artwork for a national exhibition commemorating an 800 year history of UK Parliamentary democracy.

Fratton Big Local are delighted that Fratton has been chosen to pilot Democracy Street, which will celebrate the UK’s democratic heritage.  Jon, who is a Research Fellow and Artist in Residence at the University of Portsmouth, will collaborate with commercial digital expert Joseph Cavalla to develop an interactive platform to create maps of the UK based on user-generated content as part of a major digital public arts project.

Jon and Joseph will work with Fratton residents to upload content based on local street names synonymous with Parliament and democracy, such as Percival Road (Spencer Perceval, Prime Minister in 1809) and Ernest Road (Ernest Bevin, MP).

Fratton Big Local is contributing £2,000 of our funds to the Fratton project, which at a national level is being supported by the Arts Council England, the Houses of Parliament and The Speaker’s Arts Fund.

Jon, who is also a member of the Fratton Big Local Partnership, said:

“I’m very proud to have been chosen as the first digital commission funded by the Houses of Parliament and The Speaker’s Art Fund to bring 'art to the heart' of our communities – it’s great to be able to evolve & shape both the project’s digital literacy & arts empowerment with Fratton Big Local ready for engaging nationally in 2015.”

Jon was awarded a Fellowship to the Royal Society for the Arts for the quality of his public engagement and positive disability project, and is also a member of HEFCE Disability Working Group.

Portsmouth City Councillor Eleanor Scott, Independent Councillor for Fratton Ward and non-voting member of the Fratton Big Local Partnership said:

"This project is a really exciting and creative way for people to think about their local politics and to get more involved. I'm pleased that Fratton is leading the way forward on this national programme and that we are able to announce it in Local Democracy Week 2014. We don't always think about the stories and history behind our streets, but this project will allow us to explore them in depth through an innovative approach supported by the local community.”

Budget Consultation 7th October at 7pm

The first public budget consultation meeting will be held at Portsmouth Guildhall on 7th October at 7pm in the Council Chamber.
Over the next three years the council has to save at least another £37m from the £211m of our budget that we control. This is on top of the £61.3m we have already saved over the past four years.
We are working hard to meet the challenge and continue to provide quality services for our residents but we cannot make these savings through efficiencies alone. Tough choices have to be made about the services we continue to provide.
The council is running a budget consultation to ask for views about some possible ways we could save money. The suggestions in the consultation are very much just ideas at this stage. No decisions have been taken.
If you are interested, please take part in the consultation. Your views will help to shape the budget.
  • Follow the link to complete the council's Resident Budget Consultation 2015/2016 online survey
  • The consultation closes on 13 October 2014
You can also request paper copies of the survey by calling 023 9243 7996.

Budget Consultation 9th October at 7pm

Please note that this budget consultation session is being held from 7pm PRIOR to the Neighbourhood Forum at 8pm.

New type of school in Portsmouth

Portsmouth City Council, the University of Portsmouth and the Navy are currently working to submit a bid to set up Portsmouth City University Technical College (UTC) to help overcome a national shortage of engineers.

A UTC is a specialist engineering school for 14 to 18 year olds that will allow students to study for their core curriculum alongside engineering qualifications, work experience and leadership training.

We aim to open one in Portsmouth in September 2016 for students entering years 10 and 12.  In order to create a successful bid, we need input from parents and students in the Hampshire area.

If you're a parent (who lives within a 65 minute commute) or you know someone who is, we'd be keen to hear from them and if you have/know a child aged 10 – 14 then we're looking for their views too.

Feel free to forward the survey to friends and family.  Surveys close 2 September.

Heatwave Plan for England – Looking after yourself and others during hot weather – The latest advice

Top tips for keeping cool
It is best for your health to avoid getting too hot in the first place. Remember to think of those who may be more at risk from the effects of heat. Below are some tips to keep yourself and others cool and what to do if someone feels unwell:

Stay out of the heat:
• Keep out of the sun between 11.00am and 3.00pm.
• If you have to go out in the heat, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat and light scarf.
• Avoid extreme physical exertion. If you can’t avoid strenuous outdoor activity, like sport, DIY or gardening, keep it for cooler parts of the day, like early morning or evening.
• Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes.

Cool yourself down:

Does your group or organisation support people with Autism?

Do you feel there needs to be more money to help with the issues around Autism?

Would £500k make a difference?

Join Action Portsmouth on Tuesday
1 July at 1pm at the Queens Hotel, Southsea.

Action Portsmouth is helping to bring a group of people together to look at applying to the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund to help tackle some of the issues that people with Autism face.

The Reaching Communities programme has four outcomes. The word outcome is used to describe the key changes or differences the funding will make. Every project must help achieve one or more of these outcomes:
  1. People having better chances in life, with better access to training and development to improve their life skills
  2. Stronger communities, with more active citizens working together to tackle their problems
  3. Improved rural and urban environments, which communities are better able to access and enjoy
  4. Healthier and more active people and communities.
Action Portsmouth would like to invite parents, carers, psychologists, clinicians, service users, and service providers or anyone who feels that they want to be part of something GREAT.

In this meeting you will look at what is required for the bid and what you would like to go in the application.
Action Portsmouth will go through the process in plain language and will make sure that everyone has their say.
A good variety of people is needed to make sure this bid is a strong community-led bid and is what is needed for Portsmouth.

This is YOUR chance to make a difference.

The whole process of applying for Reaching Communities takes about a year, but there will be plenty of support available from The Big Lottery Fund throughout.

If you would like to attend the meeting please call 023 9282 2795 or email Jacky Charman on jacky.charman@actionhants.org.uk.

Action Portsmouth look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 1 July at 1pm at the Queens Hotel, Clarence Parade, Southsea, Portsmouth, PO5 3LJ.

Flood risk research

We have been approached by a research student who would like to interview people interested in flood risk responsibility in Portsmouth:-

Hi there,

I am a current MSc Disasters, Adaption and Development student at the University of King's College London and previously completed a BSc in Environmental Sciences at the University of Southampton.

For my MSc research project, I intend to investigate the difference between perceived, legal and enacted responsibilities for risk management from flood hazard in Portsmouth and I wonder if you would be willing to take part in this exciting research!

By conducting semi-structured interviews, I am inviting key stakeholders in Portsmouth in order to compare the perceptions of flood risk and the appropriate management of the hazard. I need to identify groups of people who are already interested in flooding in Portsmouth, who will have a view of their own perceived risk, and who has responsibility for managing flood risk (the individual, state, insurers etc).

By carrying out this research, I hope to understand the perceptions of flood risk from those shaping/involved in the flood risk management and those that are experiencing it/residents of Portsmouth. How do the flood policies compare to local experiences of risk amongst various stakeholders in the coastal city of Portsmouth?

If you are interested taking part in my research regarding flood risk responsibility in Portsmouth, it would involve an interview that would last no longer than an hour of your time. Although there are no direct benefits to taking part, the information I get from the study will help to understand and potentially influence current and future policy on flood risk management in Portsmouth! The perceptions and expectations for flood risk management and protection are critical in mediating the impacts and promoting longer-term adaptation. Understanding and making rights and responsibilities explicit may smooth pathways to effective and legitimate management and adaptation.

I would be delighted if you could take part!

If you are interested, please do get in touch!

Best regards,

Stephanie Rademaker

If you are able to help Stephanie in her research please contact her directly using the email above.
