Jubilee Eco Terrace

84 Jubilee Terrace is a council-owned property with a difference.
Built at the turn of the twentieth century, the family home has been refurbished using modern eco-friendly techniques. The house is being showcased as an example of what environmentally-friendly methods can be employed in an average city home to improve efficiency and save its occupants money

Open Days
The eco terrace is throwing its doors open so you can see what they've done to the house, and what you could do to your own home to make it warmer, cheaper to run and make it better for the environment.
The house is open on 13 April (9:30am - 4pm), 14 April (2 - 7pm) and 19 April (9:30am - 4pm).

Portsmouth’s Favourite Trees

Do you know of an outstanding tree?

Portsmouth and Southsea Tree Wardens Would like to hear from you.

It may be particularly old or big for its species or it may have wildlife or landscape value. It could have been the centre of great events or linked to a famous person. It could even be rare. It does not have to be a native tree; it could be an exotic or even a fruit or hedgerow tree. The Den Haag Elm is a fine example on Southsea Common.

They would like to invite every Ward within the City, to nominate up to three favourite trees. They intend to publish a booklet of the chosen trees and possibly produce a calendar featuring twelve of these trees. Entries will be judged by a panel of experts.

This is a chance to recommend a tree of your choice and contribute to a local (and national) record.

An Introduction to Social Media and Social Networking

Council budget for 2011-2015

Council tax has been frozen for Portsmouth residents for the second year running, following a meeting of Full Council that took some tough budget decisions.

The council’s grant settlement from the Government has been cut by almost £15m and as a result the council’s budget for 2011/12 included £15m of savings. The savings will result in the loss of 186 jobs across the council, some full-time and some part-time.

Although it needs to make savings, the council is continuing to deliver services that are important to Portsmouth residents. There’s no change to weekly rubbish collections, libraries and museums will remain open, as will adventure playgrounds.

The council is also continuing to invest in the city. A £10m capital programme was agreed at the meeting, including modernising more than 20 schools, and investing in the seafront, the splashpool at Hilsea, and Beechside residential unit. The programme includes £2m for local transport schemes.

The council is working with social enterprise, Yellow Kite, on improvements to Southsea Castle which will include a new cafe and free admission, and work is underway on the new library and customer contact centre in Palmerston Road.

Investment in modern care for our most vulnerable older residents will also continue, with a new care home opening at Harry Sotnick House in the spring and development of new extra care flats continuing. And the council is continuing to invest in private housing across the city, allowing more people to remain in their own homes.

This booklet (link above) highlights what happens when you call 999 in a medical emergency and gives more information about the professionals who may attend you. It also outlines how you can help South Central Ambulance Service to help the communities they serve. This could be as a community first responder, volunteer car driver, fundraiser, or by becoming a member on their journey towards becoming a foundation trust. 

Recycled Art Competition

Create a work of art from recycled materials and raise £400 for your charity or school

The recycling centre in Port Solent will be relaunched in May 2011 after a period of redevelopment to improve its' capacity for recycling. To raise awareness of recycling facilities across the city, we are inviting all charities and schools based in Portsmouth to create an artwork from recycled materials.

All short listed artworks will be displayed at a public exhibition and two prizes will be awarded:

Scamnesty is coming!

From the 1- 28 February 2011, bins will be placed around the city to enable residents to drop off any unwanted scam mailings. Seafront cycle route - small scale remedial works

Some small scale remedial works will be taking place on the seafront cycle route towards the end of this month.

It is envisaged that the start date will be 24th January (this date is subject to change due to weather) and that the disruption, if any, will be minimal.

Portsmouth Local Involvement Network (LINk)

The Portsmouth Local Involvement Network (LINk) is a group of residents who are interested in bringing about improvements to Health and Social Care Services available in the City.

The LINk has a special interest in reaching all sections of the Community and to this end they extend an offer to attend meetings in order to deliver a short presentation (or informal talk) about the aims of the LINk and how to get involved.

Community Tasking Groups

Community Tasking Groups (CTGs) meet every four weeks in the four policing areas of the city. The CTGs are made up of police and partner agencies such as the council, fire brigade and other community groups, and they meet to discuss current community issues, their objective is to work in partnership to resolve local community priorities. These priorities are identified through different consultation processes with local groups and individuals.


Together they work to resolve quality of life issues that impact on the local community and often include anti social behaviour, youth problems, environmental issues and anything else that could have a negative impact on your and your neighbours lives.

If you would like an issue raised at the meeting please contact your local Police Safer Neighbourhood team or City Councillor who would be able to represent your views.

VISIT TO GLA (December 2010)

A small group of us went to the Greater London Authority (GLA) to attend a session of the London Assembly (Plenary) and to hear about some of the work undertaken there.
